BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Leasing Guide (2020-)
We’ve put together some basic analysis that will hopefully help guide and inform you on the best BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe to lease.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is a new foray for BMW, and as such, it can be quite complex trying to understand which model offers the best value for money.
The 2 Series Gran Coupe is trying to fill a market that is niche – basically being a 1 Series with a longer body and with coupe-like looks that try to convey elegance, stance and presence, and an alternative to rival models like the Mercedes CLA.
We’ve analysed the entire BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe line-up and provided you with the best overall choice for a lease.
We do not review vehicles at Car Leasing Guru, instead, we look at value for money based on things like whole life costs, specification, residual values and how much you will pay per month.
If you want a visualised chart to help you understand our decision, please skip down to ‘Total Lease Cost‘. We’ve also provided a working example so you can see how we break down the retail price vs monthly lease cost and show you where to find value.
Analysis – The Best Overall Choice
We’ve determined that the best 2 Series Gran Coupe to lease is the 218i M Sport 4dr DCT. This model received a Car Leasing Guru score of 8.9/10 based on our metrics. Click here to see how we score vehicles.
The 218i M Sport 4dr DCT has the lowest percentage of list out of all the models we’ve looked at (28.7%) Meaning that you would pay 28.7% of the total value over the course of two years, covering 10,000 miles per annum.
What does that percentage mean in reality? It means that over the course of a 2 year / 10,000 mile per annum lease, you would be spending a total of £8,458.
Analysis – The Best Alternative Choice
We’ve isolated another model that, according to our analysis, are the best alternatives to the 218i M Sport 4dr DCT model above.
We recommend the 218i M Sport 4dr [Tech Pack].
This model scored an 8.8/10 Car Leasing Guru score.
It’s percentage of list, as described above, runs at 29.2% which translates to an actual total lease cost (over 2 years / 10,000 miles per annum) of £8,644.
In reality, that means there is a £186 difference between our overall best choice and the best alternative over the course of a 2-year lease. Your personal circumstances will determine whether you would prefer the automatic DCT gearbox over the Manual Tech Pack alternative; or maybe a combination of both if your budget allows.
There are three specifications to choose from in the 2 Series Gran Coupe model line-up. The base model ‘Sport’ up to the ‘M’. However, the ‘M Sport’ models easily offer the best value for money when looking at the entire range.
The ‘Sport‘ model gets:
- 17″ alloys
- dual-zone A/C
- cruise control
- LED headlights
- front and rear parking sensors
- sports seats
The ‘M Sport‘ model everything the Sport gets, PLUS:
- 18″ alloys
- M Sport steering
- electric folding door mirrors
- heated front seats
- M Sport suspension
- M aerodynamic body styling
- sports seats in leather
The ‘M‘ gets everything the M Sport gets, PLUS:
- 18″ alloys (different style to the M Sport)
- automatic air-conditioning
- M steering wheel
- M seats
- extended lighting pack
- M rear spoiler
Engine & Gearbox
The current BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe petrol range comes with either a 1.5-litre engine that produces 136PS on the 218i models or a 3.0 engine that produces 306PS on the M235i models.
You have the option of a 6-speed manual or the 8-speed semi-automatic gearbox on most models.
Total Lease Costs
Whilst we have provided our analysis on the best BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, we can appreciate that there are many other vehicles within that range. So we’ve provided a couple of charts that visually show you the total lease cost for models that also got a high Car Leasing Guru score.
The terms and mileages are generic based on popular searches online, but if you require specific monthly pricing for your own circumstances, then please use the price guide on the homepage, and we’ll tell you what you should be paying per month.
Mileage is calculated per annum. 36m 20k = 36-month lease, with a total end mileage of 60,000.

Analysis – Value For Money
The cheapest of the nine models above costs; £25,590. This is the 218i Sport 4dr. It has the lowest specification as standard and only a manual gearbox.
Let’s see where we can get more for our money, and not spend an obscene amount more for the privilege.
The car we personally endorse is the 218i M Sport 4dr DCT; which costs £29,440 and has a lot more specification.
The ‘M Sport’ model comes with everything the Sport model gets PLUS an 8-speed auto gearbox, M Sport suspension, M aerodynamic body styling, heated seats, electric folding mirrors and leather sports seats etc.
There’s a £3,850 difference between the two vehicles from the manufacturer’s list price.
Analysis – Working Example
On The Road Prices
218i Sport 4dr | £25,590
218i M Sport 4dr DCT | £29,440
Difference in On The Road Price | £3,850
Next, we’ll look at how much you would pay over a 2-year lease, doing 10,000 miles a year. (use graph above as a reference)
Total Lease Costs
218i Sport 4dr | £7,569
218i M Sport 4dr DCT | £8,458
Difference in the Total Lease Cost (over 2 years) | £889
Monthly payment: £889 / 24 months = £37.04
Lots of numbers, so let me explain.
What this tells us is that there is an OTR price difference of £3,850 between these two vehicles, but you would actually only be spending an additional £889 over the course of a 2-year lease.
This is because the additional interior and exterior specification adds a lot of “value” to the vehicle from a Residual Value (RV) perspective. The automatic gearbox, ‘M Sport’ specification, leather upholstery etc. hold (proportionally) a lot more value in the used market than you would otherwise think they do.
The main takeaway from this analysis is that just because a particular model costs a lot more to buy from new, if you lease the correct model, you can get a lot more for your money, and only pay a small proportion of that amount.
This is just some very basic analysis that will hopefully help you understand the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe a little better.
